Freightliner unveiled their new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! truck last night and I know the designer. I’ll send him the oppo link … this should be fun.
Worth noting it was his exterior theme , packaging, engineers and bean counters happen. Either way, not bad for someone who graduated last year.
He already knows how I feel:

Firstly thank you for taking questions.
What necessitated the move away from a split windscreen? Is there any real engineering reason for this or is it aesthetics alone? How will this effect the cost of windshield replacement?
Where are the wing mirrors on the hood and how are you supposed to see what’s passing you without them?
thanks!

Apart from the styling is it the same as the Mercedes equivalent?

Very cool truck, except for the Ford Edge lights.

How much of the lighting will make it to production?

I think you should have added more grille.
But in all seriousness - nice job and congrats! Has to be incredible seeing your design come to fruition and before long, out on the road.

Man, if this will encourage truck drivers to stay out of the passing lane, that alone is a great benefit of this technology.

I bet the top cab lights and maybe the bumper lights. I doubt the headlight and grille lights will.
But big rig aftermarket and customizing is a huge industry. So you best believe there will be aftermarket options available.

How do you expect to break the news of these to the truckers union? I can’t see them being very happy about this.

I can answer part of that. Mirrors and cameras/screens.

Not his job! Also it still needs a driver in the truck …. for now.

I really do like the rest of the design. But those bug me.

Granted Im not in the know, but this is the first road legal (partly) autonomous truck. Doesnt that make it a lot different?
![]() 05/06/2015 at 12:04 |

Yeah, it’s the for now part that they are going to be concerned with.
![]() 05/06/2015 at 12:08 |

So what sensors are being used? Also does it have any more capability than this or is the big news the fact that they made this legal.

When given the oppurtunity to design a big rig why not start off with a more aerodynamic shape?
![]() 05/06/2015 at 13:25 |

Because radiator.

Raise the driver seat and move it forward 3 feet: Boom problem solved, unless center of gravity is a problem.

Big trucks have not had a split windshield in a long time. Not needed anymore. Structural concerns are not a factor now and visibility is improved. The “wing mirrors” are now convex mirrors mounted on the fenders to allow the driver to see to the side areas. That video did not include them.
